TOPIC: The Nurture 4 Wellbeing Programme for Junior Cycle & TY.
In addition to the nationwide introduction of this new subject into the Junior Cycle, the more recent challenges of moving to online teaching and learning as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted the need to support student wellbeing. The authors, three enterprising Cork teaching colleagues Sanchia Connolly, Aran O’Driscoll and Holly Peters Sanchia, feel passionate about providing teacher-friendly, digital resources that are incredibly easy to deliver, in a classroom setting or remotely, and significantly ease the stress on students by providing them with a skill-set to cope with challenges. Never before has there been a more urgent need to cultivate student wellbeing.
The Nurture Wellbeing Programme, consists of 134 lessons or 89 hours of Wellbeing across the three years of Junior Cycle, and has grown from the authors’ teaching of Wellbeing to Junior Cycle students in their own classrooms.
In order to ensure optimum use of teachers’ valuable time, peak performance in the classroom and high levels of student learning, the three Cork teachers have developed a method of delivering Wellbeing in schools that they know works effectively.
These new comprehensive Teaching Packs which will help teachers deliver their Wellbeing lessons with ease - and help schools to reach the Department of Education and Skills requirement of schools to deliver 400 hours of Wellbeing in Junior Cycle.

Something that proved invaluable for delivering lessons remotely during the lockdown.
“Teachers will also see that the Student Journals ‘Nurture – A Student’s Guide to Wellbeing Year One’ (and Year Two and Year Three!) are packed full of activities and homework assignments to support teaching and ensure optimum levels of student learning and engagement, “ says Aran, co-author of the programme. “We also wanted Gaelcholáistí to have access to these resources, as
Irish-language schools are often up against it in terms of finding suitable resources in Irish, so we set about translating Year One into Irish and that is now available. Parents can order these, along with the other Student Journals online at www.amazon.co.uk”
All Teacher Plans, PowerPoints and Student Journal Entries include Learning Goals and Statements of Learning, as per NCCA Guidelines. Holly highlights the need for meticulous planning of new educational programmes. They provide teachers with a ready-to-go Subject Department Plan, as well as detailed Schemes of Work, so that with their planning already done for them, they can get on with the business of teaching while also providing their school’s management team with these planning documents with a few clicks of the mouse.
“We’ve done all the hard work, so you don’t have to!”
The creation of the Nurture Wellbeing Programme has been a three-year labour of love, with the wellbeing of students as its guiding principle.
