SU19-01 A Problem-Solving Aproach to Teaching and Learning Maths 1st-6th Class
This course will support teachers in delivering the PSMC for mathematics (1st – 6th class) and providing their pupils with a variety of interactive learning experiences, across a wide range of strands, in numeracy, leading to increased pupil engagement and enjoyment of maths. It will emphasise the importance of higher order skill development with pupils as they experience mathematical concepts, firstly in a concrete way, before progressing to the pictorial and abstract stages. It aims to involve teachers in actively constructing mathematical concepts with their pupils through the use of higher order questions and eliciting, supporting and extending their pupils’ mathematical ideas. It will explore problem solving as a core component and central to the purpose of teaching and learning primary school maths. Please note that the €50 fee for this course is a Centre/Administration charge and not a PDST charge.
