This Webinar aims to develop primary school teacher’s awareness ofspeech and language development and the multilingual child. The facilitators will share knowledge and strategiesto support speech and language development in multilingual children with and without speech & language impairmentsin the primary school context.

Learning outcomes:
To understand the terms simultaneous and sequential multilingual children
To learn the distinction between language for social purposes vs academic language and time frames for development
To learn how a child’s multilingual speech, language comprehension, and oral language develops
To learn strategies to support speech and language development in multilingual children with and without speech & language impairments.
Facilitators
Mary-Pat O'Malley is a registered speech and language therapist and lecturer with over 25 years of experience of working with families. She is passionate about supporting multilingual families where there are concerns about their child's speech and language development, using evidence-based strategies through her blog Talk Nua. You can find her blogat www.talknua.com.She has recently set up a Facebook group called Becoming Bilingual with multilingual speech & language Therapist Nadja Herkner. She is involved in a range of research projects aiming to improve speech and language therapy services for multilingual families.
Clare Carroll, CORU SL020076
Clare Carroll, PhD, is a registered speech and language therapist and a lecturer at National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland. Clare has a wealth of clinical experience from working in the Irish Health Service and in private practice. She is passionate about collaborative working with children, parents, teachers and health and social care professionals. She is interested in learning more about how interventions can be informed by the people who need them, in particular, understanding what is important to people with communication difficulties.
